What the heck is a rendezvous?

When Wolfe and I got together three years ago, he had told me that he and his parents have been going to rendezvous for many years. When he told me that, I asked myself that very same question and as if he could read my mind, he pulled out all of his rendezvous stuff and showed me. He had buckskin pants, a buckskin shirt, moccasins, throwing knives, leather making supplies, and a great looking muzzleloader that his step-dad had detailed himself. I was truly amazed and wanted to know more. The very same year that we got together, he and his family went to the Nationals and he brought back some buckskin. He told me that I could make my own buckskin dress. I was a little bit scared, seeing how I had never done anything like this before. I had no idea what I was doing, but Wolfe was with me, helping me every step of the way.

My first rendezvous was in Monticello, Utah. I didn't have a muzzleloader, but my dress was finished by then. We went with his family and his best friend and we had a blast! We walked around the camp and everywhere I looked, men, women and children, were dressed in the primitive 1800 era clothing. Capotes, buckskin clothes, coon hats, and venders sold clothing and supplies. I was in awe. When it came time for the shoots, I just watched and rooted on my family. I watched Wolfe and realized just how good he was. At one point in time, I borrowed Wolfe's mom's muzzleloader and decided right then and there that I wanted to be a part of this wonderful lifestyle!

So how did I get the name '3 Cap'?

We went to the Happy Canyon Rendezvous near Montrose, Colorado back in 2007. I was so excited! Not only did I have the rest of my clothes, but Wolfe had bought me my first muzzleloader. I couldn't wait to shoot it. Wolfe explained and showed me how to load it, clean it and take good care of it. I had a lot of help from his mom, too. When it came time for the shoot, I was ready! I walked up, cocked the hammer back, squeezed the trigger and..... Nothing. I looked at Wolfe and he looked at me and told me to try again. So I did. Cocked the hammer back, squeezed the trigger and.... Nothing. I was wondering what the heck was going on? Wolfe smiled at me and told me to try it again. I pulled the hammer back, squeezed the trigger and she finally went off. And I even hit the target! The problem was, when my hammer would release, it didn't hit the cap in full. 3 times was indeed the charm. After a few adjustments, we got her working properly. That my friends is how I became 3 Cap.....

Wolfe and I have made our own rendezvous stuff. We have clothes, sitting chairs, a Hot Box (For our dry food) and our own folding table. Every rendezvous we go to, we cook with our cast iron pots and our cast iron utensils. We take our Capotes and our buckskin clothing and sleep in our canvas tent. There's no way to describe the feeling of a rendezvous until you've been there to experience it yourself! You actually get an idea of how people survived back in the 1800's.

For 3 years, I have truly enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. Some might think that going out in the mountains, dressing up in clothes from the 1800 era, sleeping in canvas tents, shooting off canons at 3am and yelling, "Fire in the hole!", and cooking with cast iron on open fires is a little strange, but not this family. At first, I thought Wolfe was crazy, until I went to my first rendezvous and saw how much people truly enjoyed doing what they did. Hell, if he's crazy, then so am I!

Take your time to read through my web site and enjoy the pictures from other rendezvous. Read The Meaning and understand how rendezvous actually came to be. Chances are, they are already planning next year's awesome rendezvous!
